How the Zix-Zak works, step by step
Five stages carry inland brackish water through the ion-exchange cycle — capturing, eluting and finishing the dissolved ions while the water flows out clean.
Profile the ions
The full-panel water report fixes the ion inventory — which cations and anions are present, and at what concentration. This sets the exchange chemistry and the recovery targets for the whole cycle.
Pre-condition the feed
Suspended solids and foulants are removed up front so the exchange media stay clean and selective — protecting the capacity that lets recovery run past the membrane plateau.
Selective ion capture (load)
As water passes through the Zix-Zak media, target ions are exchanged out of solution and held on the resin. The water leaves de-ionized and clean while the ions stay behind, sorted by affinity.
Elute & regenerate
The loaded media are eluted to release the captured ions as concentrated, separated streams, then regenerated for the next cycle — so the system runs continuously without producing a mixed brine.
Finish water & fertilizer
The recovered water is polished to clean-water spec and the eluted, sorted ions are finished into farm-grade fertilizer — two saleable outputs from one stream.
Close the loop — zero discharge

Why ion exchange instead of more membranes?
Membrane recovery is limited by osmotic pressure, which climbs as ions concentrate. Ion exchange acts on the ions directly, so the Zix-Zak keeps recovering past that wall — and captures ions selectively, which is what makes the by-product a sortable fertilizer rather than mixed brine.
